A worthwhile and viable project / Prevent poor projects from starting.

Objectives

  • A valid business reason to initiate the project.
    This is defined in the outline Business Case.
  • The necessary authority exists to initiate the project.
    The Project Board is in place to initiate the project.
  • The Project Management Team is appointed.
  • The Project Scope is well defined in the Project Brief.
  • The Project Approach is evaluated and approach is selected.
    Experts and lessons provide input to this step.
  • Create the Project Brief.
  • Create the Initiation Stage Plan.

Roles and Responsibilities

Corp. Or Prog. Mgmt:
Appoint Executive and PM. Project mandate.
Executive:
Appoint PM. Confirm PMT. Create outline BC.
Senior User:
Supply information for PPD.
Senior Supplier:
Review Project Approach.
Project Manager:
Assist Executive. Create PPD, PB and IS plan.
Team Manager:
Project Assurance:
Project Support:
Assist the PM.

Applying the Themes

Business Case (Why):
Outline Business Case is defined.
Organisation (Who):
Appointing the Executive, Project Manager and the Project Management Team.
Quality (What):
Project Product Description is created with relevant quality information.
Plans (How, How much, When):
Initiation Stage Plan is created.
Risk (What if):
Risks are added to the Daily Log. Major risks are included in the outline Business Case.
Change (What is the impact):
All documents created in this process are placed under Configuration Management.
Progress (Where are we, direction, should we carry on):
Project tolerances are defined by Corporate or Programme Management.
