7 PRINCE2 Processes

Prince2 Processes

Purpose

A Process is a set of activities designed to accomplish a certain objective.
It takes one or more input and produces defined outputs. It is divided into activities to help to direct, manage and deliver the project. Each process is the responsibility of one management level.

Pre Project

This is the phase, before the actual project, where the feasibility of the project is determined. It starts with an idea or a need or other trigger (the PRINCE2 term is 'project mandate').

The Focus on Products principle states that a Product Description should be written as soon and as clear as possible in the project, so that all stakeholders will have a clear idea of what to expect.

  • A worthwhile and viable project / Prevent poor projects from starting.

Initiation Stage

This is the phase where the exact scope is determined and the project is planned in detail. Funding needs to be obtained and the roles and responsibilities of each team member is set. The project management strategies and controls are covered in this phase.

  • Establish the work that needs to be done.

Subsequent Delivery Stages

The focus in this phase is on product delivery via the execution of work packages. The Project Manager assigns work and monitors and controls the work on a day to day basis. The execution of the project is split over several delivery stages.

  • Delegate, monitor and Control the work. Maintain focus on product delivery.

Final Delivery Stage

In this phase the Project Manager will be accepting and getting approval for the last products to be produced. The project board needs to be satisfied that product recipients are in a position to use and own all the products on an ongoing basis.

  • Transfer products to operational organisation and decommission the project.
